There will be considerable construction in Landmark over the winter as the RM of Tache completes a $12 million upgrade of the community's water system. Chief Administrative Officer Christine Hutlet says they had hoped to complete the project by this fall. But they had to extend the deadline due to the complexity of building a new water treatment plant plus installing new underground pipes throughout Landmark. Hutlet says the system should be finished next summer and that will trigger a development boom there.

"We are currently working with a developer that had been approved back in July for a 211-residential-unit-subdivision. They would actually like to have a shovel in the ground as early as February or March. So we're going to be seeing a huge boom for Landmark, on the east side of the community."

Hutlet says the underground water lines will be pushed in over the winter and the individual hook-ups to each home and business will happen next spring and summer.

"For the majority of the streets, we will be doing new water lines. Some of the existing lines are already adequate, but the majority of the town will see new water lines going in. The (the contractor) actually will not be doing a whole lot of trenching, they are going to be pushing the lines in for the majority of the project. So, we're hoping not to disrupt the community quite as much as we would have otherwise, outside of when we go to do the hook-ups to the individual homes."

She adds another big part of the project will be the installation of fire hydrants throughout Landmark.

"That's going to be a significant change for the community, not only on our operational end of it as to what we can provide for fire protection, but a lot of the homeowners will be able to see a reduction in their insurances, having that fire protection available within so many feet of their homes."
