Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews says the end result could have been much worse.

He is referring to a fire call Thursday afternoon south of Mitchell. Firefighters were called to Sanders Lane shortly before 2:45 pm, where a grass and brush fire was burning out of control.

"It appears as though there's a house under construction on the site and there's a pile of debris that appears to have been burned and probably got out of hand," explains Toews. "When we arrived here there's no owner on site."

Toews says it is much too windy to be burning today.

He adds if a neighbour hadn't spotted the fire it could have been much worse.

There was no damage to the house under construction and no injuries.

As firefighters were clearing the scene, a call came down for a grass fire along Randolph Road at Twin Creek Road, north of Highway 52. Toews says there is an MTS communications tower going up in a field there. Sparks from the installation of a chain link fence caused a grass fire which spread to some corn stalks. Again, there were no injuries. The scene was cleared around 4 pm.
