French and Metis culture was celebrated this weekend in St. Malo for the annual Festival of Friends.

Shana Berard, President of Friends, says one event they brought back this year was the pow wow on Saturday night in partnership with the Roseau River Ojibwe First Nation. She adds the traditional meal of Pea soup and bannock was also served and Berard explains why it's so important to teach younger generations about this culture.

"We have a diverse community. Metis culture runs very prominently here and I9 think it's really important that the kids get introduced to such a beautiful culture that's maybe not always emphasized the way it should be."

Berard highlights one of the most important parts of the weekend and the reason why they put this festival on every year.

"It's important for a community especially of young families, life gets really busy so it's important to bring everyone together, have some fun, stop focussing on everyday duties and just get to know your neighbors. The kids have a riot running around together, just really have a good time celebrating."
