The Steinbach Fire Department was called to a structure fire Wednesday morning northeast of Mitchell.

Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Mike Penner says it was the result of a new furnace being installed in an older home. He explains they were cutting a vent hole when sparks hit the sawdust used as insulation inside the wall. Penner says the sawdust started smouldering and caught fire.

He notes firefighters cut a hole in the outside wall in order to get to the smouldering. Penner gives a damage estimate of between $25,000 and $40,000, noting there will be repairs needed to the house and then also smoke cleanup.

Penner says there were no injuries.
