The Steinbach, Ste. Anne, and Giroux Fire Departments extinguished a garbage fire turned brush fire just north of Blumenort Sunday evening.

Steinbach Assistant Fire Chief Russ Reimer says they were dispatched to a garbage fire that was threatening a structure, but it ended up being outside the Steinbach Fire Departments boundaries.

"We were in Ste. Anne’s district so we immediately dispatched them as well as the Giroux tanker but at the same time we did have a fully involved brush fire that was just about to catch a Quonset on fire so we got our crew in here and got lines, got water on the fire super fast, managed to knock that down and get the fire under control prior to Ste. Anne’s arrival."

Reimer says they then transferred the scene over to the Ste. Anne Fire Department as soon as they arrived to take care of hot spots and make sure it was completely out. He notes the owners did their due diligence to make sure the fire was within the rules.

"They have a metal bin on concrete blocks and they were burning in there today with the burn ban lifted and things look green around the bin but even with that said, we have only had one rainfall and that heat transferred into that grass and it managed to take off on them from the sides of the bin."
