The Steinbach Fire Department honoured two brothers last night for their efforts in saving their house from burning to the ground back in June.

Six-year-old Kyren Geisheimer was given an Honourary Deputy badge and his brother Chase, who is five, was made an honourary firefighter. The two brothers alerted their mom that fire was coming out of the roof of their home after it had been struck by lightning on June 29th.

I think you're surprised sometimes by what your kids know and what they can do," says their dad Kevin Geisheimer, "they surprise us all the time. I never would have thought that would have been their reaction, it's raining outside and they see smoke, to go tell mom about the fire and they did."

"I'm super proud that they reacted the way they did on that morning," he adds.

Most of all, Geisheimer notes it was really cool for the fire department to do that and put a smile on their son's faces. He says it's been a crazy six months trying to find some regular in their lives especially as we approach the Christmas season.

"It's just neat to see the kids smile and get to ride in the fire truck and just to bring some excitement to their day in regards to what happened to our whole home situation."

Geisheimer says they recently heard from the insurance company that the damage to their home is estimated at 390,000 dollars noting good portion of their house was saved.
