Residents in the Rural Municipality of Ritchot are allowed to bring bags with leaves and grass clippings to the end of their driveway once again.

Administrator Roger Bouvier says a few weeks ago it was announced the garbage contractor would no longer be providing that service. Instead, residents who wanted to discard the product were forced to find alternate methods of delivering to the landfill.

But, Bouvier says after meeting with the contractor, he has agreed to resume the service until next month's by-election. After that, the new council will have to decide the next step.

There is still no limit to the number of bags that can be left at the road, but Bouvier says they now have a weight limit they are asking residents to stick to. Though they won't be weighing the bags, Bouvier asks for them not to exceed 40 pounds each.

According to Bouvier, it was the weight of the bags that originally halted the service. He says a couple of the contractor's employees had threatened to quit because of the heavy bags. Bouvier says it is understandable that these bags can get heavy, especially if they are wet and can sometimes rip if they have been sitting too long. Ritchot will help cover the cost for an additional employee to help out three days per week.

Bouvier admits they did receive some feedback from the public when the ban took effect. He says it makes sense that some seniors or those without access to a truck would have difficulty in getting rid of their leaves and grass clippings.
