Hanover Fire Chief Paul WiebeBoth Both the Kleefeld and Grunthal Fire Departments attended grass fires Monday evening.

Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says Kleefeld was called to a fire on Highway 52 near Provincial Road 216 around 5 P.M.

"When our crews got there they found a fire in the ditch and they were easily able to extinguish it from the road. The cause was unknown, it could be anything, speculation could say it might even be a cigarette butt, but we don’t know that. It was a fire in the ditch and so they took care of it quickly."

Wiebe says the Grunthal Fire Department was called to a grass fire around eight miles south of Steinbach at almost the same time. He notes they were able to extinguish the small fire quickly. He adds though the fire ban has been lifted, residents still need to be careful.

"We would like to give our ratepayers out in rural areas, if they need to burn some stuff we would like to give them that opportunity, at the same time, we want everyone to use caution. There is still a lot of rules in place as far as a what precautions you need to take if you are ever going to burn anything, those rules are still in effect so we just want everybody to be safe, be careful."

Wiebe says if conditions get out of control they will implement the fire ban once again but they won’t go that far if they don’t have to.

Meanwhile, La Broquerie Fire Chief Alain Nadeau reminds residents that the fire ban has not been entirely lifted in the RM of La Broquerie. He notes the fires are only allowed in approved fire pits between 6 P.M. and 6 A.M.
