The Chair of Bethesda Wellness says they are right on target to open Steinbach's newest health facilities August 1st.
Darrel Penner is referring to both Bethesda Primary Care Centre and Stonebridge Wellness Centre being constructed along Stonebridge Crossing north of Eastman Education Centre.
Bethesda Primary Care Centre will be 29,477 square feet in size and has a price tag of approximately $12 million. Penner says Steinbach Family Medical will be a major tenant. On the main floor, there will be room for up to thirty doctors' offices, a QuickCare Clinic and pharmacy. Southern Health will be leasing space on the second floor for mental health and various other health related activities. Crews broke ground May 30, 2016.
The Stonebridge Wellness Centre across the street will have 16,500 square feet available for lease for health-related professionals like physiotherapists and chiropractors as well as vendors of medical equipment. It is expected to cost $3.9 million to build. Construction started around January 7, 2017.
"Things have gone very well," says Penner. "We, of course, had a fairly mild winter, so that helped construction for sure."
Penner says the Primary Care Centre should have the second level flooring completed by now. That project is expected to wrap by the end of June and be operational one month later. As for the Wellness Centre, it is expected to get turned over to Bethesda Wellness in mid-July for an August 1st opening.
According to Penner, the mild winter resulted in significant savings on heating and hoarding costs. He doesn't anticipate either project to run over budget.
Penner says the feedback they are getting for this project is very positive. He notes the brand new facility should facilitate doctor recruitment and doctor retention for southeastern Manitoba.
Kathy McPhail, Chief Executive Officer for Southern Health refers to these facilities as wraparound care. She says they will have key providers along with physician colleagues to promote this type of care. McPhail says that means your physician might tell you to walk down the hall or up the stairs and see another health professional, whether dietician, mental health or public health. She says this just makes it much easier to get all of your health needs looked after in one stop.
