Staff at the Steinbach landfill site are trying to figure out who started a fire there Thursday night.

Fire chief Mark Loewen says they got the call around 5:30 p-m that there was a fire on top of the garbage hill which was spreading fairly quickly. They were able to contain it a short time later.

Loewen adds landfill staff told him the fire was caused by someone who dropped off ashes that had not been fully extinguished. Management is going through its video surveillance to find the culprit and plans to pay that person a visit.

Loewen says the fire department got a nice assist from a construction company working on the expansion of the landfill. It used its backhoe to stir up the smouldering garbage and help the fire department douse the flames.
