The St. Pierre Fire Department battled for seven hours on Saturday to try and save a burning house but in the end, it was a total loss.

Fire Captain Rene Frechette says crews arrived on scene around 3:30 pm to an older farmhouse on fire about one mile west of St. Pierre on Rat River Drive.

"Crews came on scene to a well-involved structure fire. As soon as it breached the outer walls and caught some air, it really went up quick so our crews could not contain it to the second floor."

Frechette notes the home and all of its content were a total loss but he says the people and animals who were inside all got out safely with no injuries. There is no word on the cause of the fire but Frechette adds the Office of the Fire Commissioner has been called in to investigate.
