A chimney fire had the La Broquerie fire crews working to prevent it spreading to the walls of the home Saturday evening.

Crews were called out shortly after 10 p.m. and Fire Chief Alain Nadeau says there was a fire in the chimney and the pipe was red hot. Nadeau notes in the event of a chimney fire, water is not used to extinguish the fire because there's a risk of it collapsing. Rather, he says they wait out the burn until the pipe has cooled and monitor the surrounding structure to make sure the fire doesn't spread to the walls of the home.

Nadeau says it was suggested to the homeowner that the pipe should now be tested because there's the possibility it could be warped, cracked or compromised, which could be a hazard in the future.

He adds crews were on scene for about an hour.
