The superintendent of the Hanover School Division says there's a slight lingering smell of smoke after a fire broke out at the elevator construction site in front of Steinbach Regional Secondary School early Sunday morning.

Randy Dueck says crews were at the school all day on Sunday ventilating, cleaning up, and washing down walls in an attempt to get rid of the smell of smoke.

"The fire happened outside the school on the hoarding itself of the new elevator that we're building. Some of the smoke was able to get into a very small part of the school. The fire doors inside of the school closed and so the smoke maybe had an impact on not even 3% of the building."

Dueck notes the SRSS administration sent out an email to parents informing them of the incident.

"[The email said] if there are any kids with sensitivities, when they come to school this morning, they should come to the office and we would absolutely make accommodations for them."

He says he went to the school Monday morning and found the smell was faint and only in the front entrance.

"I could barely smell some smoke in that area where this had occurred, but as soon as I went into the areas where the fire doors had been closed, I could not smell any smoke, or when I went upstairs, I could not smell any smoke."

Dueck adds classes were not canceled because there is no smoke inside the building, 97% of the school has no smell of smoke, and the 3% of the school where smoke can be smelled is not an area where classes are held.

He says this incident is not expected to delay or have a negative impact on the elevator construction.
