Manitoba Hydro says there will be some loud bangs this weekend in the vicinity of its Riel Converter Station which is located a couple of miles north of Deacon's Corner. Spokesperson Bruce Owen says they are in the final stages of finishing the Bipole III project and will be connecting the transmission line to the converter station.

"To make the connections from one end of a conductor to another, it's a controlled implosion. The controlled explosion fuses the end of the power line or cable together. This is what we will hear, approximately a dozen of these implosions Saturday and Sunday."

Owen says the implosions will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. both days. An air horn will sound three times before each procedure. He adds the Bipole III mega-project is nearing completion.

"The majority of the work is done. There's a converter station in Manitoba's north, Keewatinohk, and that's the originating point of Bipole III, you've got the roughly 1,300-kilometre length of the transmission towers and power line and the end point is the Riel Station. This (the implosions this weekend) is one of the final points of connecting one end of Bipole III to the other."

The Bipole III line is scheduled to go into service this summer. Owen says it will improve Hydro's reliability and will accommodate growing demand.
