Council for the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie gave third and final reading to a new bylaw that allows them to enforce fines laid out in other bylaws.

Reeve Lewis Weiss says this fines bylaw gives them the power to enforce the rules they already have in place.

"Like if there is a no-truck route, we can actually have the power to enforce a ticket that is given to an individual. It would cover a wide spectrum of rules that we have from road violations to animal rules that we have that are continually disobeyed or disregarded."

La Broquerie CAO Anne Burns says the bylaw also makes it possible for a resident to appeal a fine that has been laid against them.

"This provides a process how that the person can appeal those fines. The first thing that they can do if they are not happy with the fine is request to speak to a screening officer which will be appointed by the council and if they are not satisfied with the screening officers decision, they can go to an adjudicator."

Burns says the adjudicator's decision would be final. She notes having this bylaw in place makes their bylaw officer’s job easier as well.

"We have a bylaw officer that comes twice a week. It allows him the flexibility to lay a fine if he or she feels that is required, a lot of times he will just issue warnings first and based on the history of that call he then has the authority to lay a fine on that particular infraction."
