The reeve of La Broquerie says he's looking forward to meeting with a Manitoba Hydro liaison to talk about the Manitoba-Minnesota Transmission Project.

Lewis Weiss says his biggest question is still why the line cannot be moved further east where it's not close to the village or going through any farming communities.

"And reading through the documents we received, with talking about compensation, they had mentioned if a landowner gets compensation and then the line gets moved if they have to give it back. That was one of the questions. So, obviously, the way it looks is there is still a chance things can be moved."

Weiss notes he understands there have been changes at the higher levels of the Manitoba Hydro corporation adding council has sent a letter requesting a meeting with hydro.

Communication from the Manitoba Hydro liaison included beginning discussions with landowners regarding the acquisition of right-of-way easements and related compensation. Liaison Trevor Joyal adds, beginning this month, surveyors will be accessing landowner property along the proposed transmission line in strict compliance with Manitoba Hydro's Biosecurity Policy.

"This survey work will assist in the determination of tower placement, should the project be approved. It will also provide Manitoba Hydro with the information necessary to begin discussing tower compensation values with landowners."

Joyal says there are public hearings scheduled by the Clean Environment Commission for May 8 to June 1.

Weiss says council will continue to support the residents of the La Broquerie area on this issue.
