The reeve for the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie says if the local government can't control where marijuana shops are located, then who should.

Lewis Weiss says he's happy about the decision Premier Brian Pallister made, to leave it up to the municipalities to decide where these businesses are allowed to be located, once they become legal July 1, 2018.

Reeve Lewis Weiss"If it's legal it will be available no matter what. If we can't have it in La Broquerie but we can in Ste. Anne or Steinbach allows it and nobody around does, everyone will just go to Steinbach. So, I don't think that will really be the issue at the end of it all."

Weiss notes, ideally, he would like to see the legalization held off for another year or two.

"I've listened to some documentaries on it from Colorado and it sounds like people under the age of 25 should not be using it because it can permanently damage their brain because it hasn't been fully developed. So, if we're going to damage our society here because we want some tax money it doesn't seem quite right or maybe we need to study it a little longer to learn the proper truth about it."

He says council will be discussing the topic further in the next few months to have a better idea of how they would like to handle the responsibility.
