Organizers of Let's Run, Steinbach say they are trying a few new things at this year's event.

Race day is Saturday, May 13th and Greg Penner says for the first time, they will be moving the event to Bush Farm Trail at the soccer park.

"We're very excited to use those trails, they are beautiful," says Penner. "Those trails that they've put in are just awesome and they are used often by runners."

Penner says not only will this allow them to showcase the trails, but it is also a lot easier for organizers to not have to deal with streets and traffic.

What started as Run For Mom in 2008, Let's Run, Steinbach is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Penner recalls their goal of that first year.

"We set out to just put on a great race," he says. "And I think we've really fulfilled that."

He notes even some of their sponsors have been with them since day one.

"To me, that's amazing, that they thought that our vision was worthy to support," says Penner.

And he says the event has grown. Last year their 10km event was the provincial championship.

"We've always wanted to be for kids, for families and through the years we've become better and better at doing that," he says.

Another change this year will see their popular 10km race replaced with a quarter marathon. Penner says this event is gaining popularity and will be a first for Manitoba. He notes major marathons across Canada are adding this event.

"People really like that word, marathon," he says. "And so it's a little bit of a buzz word, a little bit of marketing and just kind of fun for us to do something different."

And Penner says a quarter marathon is only about .55 kilometres longer than a 10km race.

Let's Run, Steinbach is not a fundraiser. However, proceeds from the event have always gone to support local charities. Penner says in nine years of racing they have donated about $50,000. This year's beneficiaries are Steinbach Youth For Christ and Recreation Opportunities for Children (ROC Eastman).

Race day will feature four events; quarter marathon, 5km race, 2km race for those aged K-4 and then the mini kids run for those aged 3-5. Penner says also this year they will be offering a pancake breakfast.

Registration is now open.
