A local RCMP officer helped out the Steinbach Fire Department in putting out a fire that had started in a dumpster.

The 911 call came in around 9 am for a fire in a dumpster on Carleton Drive in Steinbach. The dumpster is located in an area where multiple homes are under construction and Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Mike Penner explains.

"There was a bit of building debris at the bottom of the dumpster, very empty but enough that something ignited in there. Upon arrival, one of our local RCMP officers had actually put a fire extinguisher on it already and we came and put some water on it, put some foam on it, it’s out now."

Penner adds they’re not sure what started the fire whether it be someone passing by who threw a cigarette butt inside the dumpster or something in the construction debris that ignited.
