Monday will be a quiet day for retail in Steinbach. Monday, February 18 is Louis Riel Day.

(A statue of Louis Riel can be found on the Manitoba Legislative grounds.)Michelle Bezditny is Executive Director with Steinbach Chamber of Commerce. She says Louis Riel Day is a statutory or general holiday, which means most businesses will be closed in Steinbach, similar to a Sunday.

That means grocery stores and Clearspring Centre will remain dark all day. However, most restaurants, gas stations and convenience stores will be open.

Shoppers Drug Mart is expected to be open from 8 am to midnight.

Meanwhile, the Steinbach Aquatic Centre will offer public swim times from 10 am to 2 pm and then again from 3 pm to 6 pm. The Jake Epp Library will be closed all day.

"It gives people in Manitoba the chance to enjoy some time with their family or friends, take a short winter break or even to take part in some outdoor sport events," says Bezditny.
