The Manitoba Municipal Board has ruled in favour of a proposed apartment block along Brandt Street, just south of Tim Hortons. Two homes have been moved off of properties there to make way for a three-storey block with 16 suites. But at a Public Hearing for the required rezoning in early June, a couple from Donald Street, several blocks away, objected to the plan over concerns about the size of the building for that site and about the increase in traffic on Brandt. That sent the matter to the Municipal Board for review. It has now issued a ruling in favour of the project.

Mayor Chris Goertzen says city council will consider final approval of the project Tuesday evening.

"Council will look at third reading. Of course, you never want to assume how council is going to vote, but council was generally in favour of First and Second Reading. So, with this ruling, we fully expect that Third Reading will be looked at favourably as well. Council will have a discussion tonight and look at that closely."

Goertzen says the favourable Municipal Board ruling is another vote of confidence in the city's Official Community Plan and its Zoning Bylaw which guide development in the community.

"Over the last many years, council has very diligently looked at our development agreements, they've very diligently looked at our development plan and our zoning bylaws and this (proposal) fit in well with those plans, the long-term vision for our city. We obviously get a favourable result then, from the Municipal Board."
