Writer Director Orlando Braun will be releasing his new documentary comedy called “That Mennonite Joke” at the Keystone Cinema in Steinbach in early February.

Braun says he wanted to explore humour in Mennonite culture with this new docu-comedy.

“It is kind of a window into Mennonite culture through the eyes of humour. You can learn a lot about a culture through its humour, so we want to open the curtains a little bit so people can see into our culture and see how funny Mennonites are.”

Braun says you can't ever get away from your heritage so it is always better to simply embrace it and find the humour in it. He notes outsiders often miss this humour, and that is why he wanted to make this film.

“Growing up I was surrounded by humour all the time in my family, but then I realized that in the media, TV, News, there is never any fun stories about Mennonites. We are always portrayed as really downer and serious, and we are not.”

Braun says the film follows Niverville Comedian Matt Falk as he prepares for his first ever live television special.

“He took a year to explore more of his Mennonite heritage to see if he could add more Mennonite jokes into his act. He got to meet with lots of Mennonite humorists including authors and entertainers, and put together a new repertoire of comedy that he could hopefully release. That whole journey is captured in this film.”

Braun says the film will premiere at Keystone Cinema in Steinbach on February 6th at 4pm. Braun notes the whole premiere event is free and will be followed by the most Mennonite meal possible, faspa.
