The Town of Niverville will be hiring former Winkler Police Chief Rick Hiebert to study future policing options for Niverville.

Mayor Myron Dyck says policing has been an important issue for Niverville residents over the last few years.

“The public was particularly interested in policing, as of last year, and they came to council and said we would like council to do some more due diligence in regards to policing, so council has been working on that. Today we have hired a consultant to give us the options that we would have whether it be municipal policing, whether it be continued use of RCMP, a combination."

Dyck says Rick Hiebert is the recently retired police chief of Winkler. He notes the information presented will compare the costs and benefits of each policing options. He adds Hiebert’s experience is an excellent asset.

"He also has been a long-term police officer in the City of Winkler, he served, I think,  for over 30 years. He would have been with the city when they were a little larger than Niverville but he has personal experience with growing a police force from within."

Dyck says the mandate of the study is to get equal information on both the municipal policing option as well as RCMP options. He adds the study will cost the town $12,000.
