Commercial developers in the Town of Niverville will now go to the R.M. of Hanover for building inspection services rather than the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Until now, authority to conduct building inspections on Part 3 buildings which are over 6,458 square feet has rested with the Office of the Fire Commissioner. Niverville Mayor Myron Dyck says Hanover recently hired an inspector that previously worked at the OFC.

"There wasn't someone in our area other than coming from Winnipeg that could do these and we are too small to have our own full-time inspector of this sort. When we found out that Hanover was able to hire one we asked if we could be part of using that individual, they agreed and so we have come into this agreement with them."

The cost of Hanover’s services will be on par with what developers had been paying the OFC. Dyck says they are hopeful wait times will be shorter with Hanover than the OFC.

"It is not that we had any issues with how things were being done previously, it is just we saw this as being something of opportunity and something that might be able to provide us with marginally better service, that is what we are anticipating."

Dyck says council is happy to have this opportunity to work with surrounding municipalities.
