Niverville Mayor Myron DyckThe Mayor of Niverville says town council has a lot of work ahead of them as they prepare for a retail cannabis outlet in town.

The provincial government has selected Niverville as one of seven rural communities to get a cannabis store. This will help the province fulfill their pledge to have an outlet within a 30-minute drive of 90% of the population.

Niverville Mayor Myron Dyck says the announcement was very sudden. He says he expects this will be something that residents will want to weigh in on and would not be surprised to get some pushback.

“I think it is important for people to understand that this is not something that communities have necessarily asked for but rather that communities have been selected by the province. There are questions that we are going to have of the province and so we are going to be sending out a request to meet so that we have a better understanding of what exactly this will entail.”

Dyck says council will add this to the agenda for their committee meeting next week and will begin the research process.

“We have a lot of due diligence we now need to do and we will work through the matter. It is going to involve research, meetings with different parties including our chamber of commerce for instance. We need to look through all of the parameters and guidelines that are in place.”

In a press release, the Manitoba Minister of Enterprise and Trade Blaine Pederson says their government has been working with local governments to ensure they have a ‘fair say’ and are onboard with the proposed retail locations.

The provincial government has a Zoning For Cannabis guideline for municipalities to follow. The guideline states a buffer zone of 150 to 300 metres is typically established between cannabis stores and schools, licensed daycares, and public recreational facilities.

Dyck says at this point he does not know where a cannabis store could be located in town but that will be a part of the research council will need to do.
