New Bothwell has been awarded a Community Places grant to assist with construction of a play structure and community space.

Lisa Baldwin is Manager of Recreation and Community Services for the Rural Municipality of Hanover. She says they have been redeveloping space at the community centre. The work involves building natural play features, a traditional play structure, toboggan hill and fire pit area.

Baldwin says the final cost of this project will probably be between $80,000 and $90,000. A Community Places grant worth nearly $35,000 has just been announced.

"That's pretty good," she says. "The maximum grant you can get through this is fifty thousand dollars, so I think we're very fortunate and thankful that we're able to get this money to go towards this project."

Baldwin says the community has done some fundraising, which will go towards covering a portion of the balance. She notes they will also use money through community development initiative funds through Manitoba Hydro.

According to Baldwin a lot of the work has already been completed. She says the natural landscaping features, the hills, the sand pit area and redoing part of the old playground has been finished. With the early arrival of winter weather, Baldwin says some of the other work, including installation of the traditional playground features, will probably now have to wait until spring.
