The Steinbach RCMP Detachment is teaming up with the Steinbach Fire Department to educate parents on child car seat safety.

Fire Lieutenant Cindy Klassen-Krahn says they are holding a free car seat inspection event from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. Saturday. She notes the goal is to help educate parents so they can make the safest decisions possible.

"I personally like to help parents out because it can be very overwhelming if you are a new parent or are moving from one child to two children or if you are fortunate enough to be given the gift of twins. I like to help out when it gets to that point."

Klassen-Krahn says a trained technician will also be answering any questions parents might have about anchoring systems, where to purchase a car seat, and how to safely install the seat. She notes parents may not understand all of the rules around car seat safety.

"You want to make sure that your car seat is bought in Canada and meets Canada’s motor vehicle safety standards. You are going to look for a red maple leaf or a black maple leaf. If it says it has been checked and meets all safety codes with the Canadian motor vehicle safety standards and make sure that before you purchase, look at the expiration date."

Klassen-Krahn notes rules on second-hand car seats will also be covered as well as free inspections.
