If you drive through St. Pierre on a frequent basis, you should probably get used to slowing down even more than usual.

That's because a 30km/h speed zone has been put in place starting at Ecole Real Berard all the way up to the Caisse Financial building. The speed limit in town prior to the change was 50km/h. Mayor Raymond Maynard says they tossed the idea around for a couple of years now and with the two schools in town being along Highway 59, they decided to send a request to Manitoba Infrastructure.

"It's more important for the security of the kids," notes Maynard who says they received letters from a number of concerned residents requesting the speed change. On top of both schools being located along the busy highway, there is also a significant amount of semi traffic passing though town throughout the day.

"So we acted on it immediately and sent it (the request) into the government and it was really quick. Within two to three months it was all put into place and we got the signs put up."

The signs were put up Thursday morning.
