A local Cancer survivor says she's blown away by the support and the generosity shown by the community at Steinbach's Relay For Life held on Saturday.

Sam Lajoie notes she has been Cancer free since 2012 and says this is an event that she holds close to her heart.

"As a survivor I think it means a lot, it means the world to have so many people behind you supporting you and giving you that extra bit of hope it's everything it really is to have everybody raise money towards the people that are currently going through it as well I mean it's an incredible event."

Lajoie along with approximately 126 other survivors took part in the survivor's walk which kicked off the relay. Chair of the event Bill Chabot says 18 teams were entered in the event and even though attendance has been down in recent years they still surpass their fundraising goals.

"Our goal was to hit 80,000 dollars and I think we're there."

In total over 86,000 dollars was raised with proceeds going towards Cancer research.

12 members of the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club also took place in the relay but with their own spin on it. The 12 members teed off at noon and played non-stop til midnight on Saturday. In total, they played 60 holes of golf and raised around11,000 dollars.
