The Mayor of Ritchot says it is time to make safety improvements in St. Adolphe before someone dies.

Chris Ewen says there are some major pedestrian safety concerns along Provincial Roads 200 and 210. He is thankful the province put up a four-way stop at that intersection but notes more is needed.

According to Ewen, PR 210 is becoming a very busy and prominent highway in Ritchot. He says trucks are using that stretch to access Highway 59 from Highway 75. Though locals like to use that highway to go for walks, take out their dogs or to go biking with the kids, Ewen says it is just not that safe anymore.

"It's becoming dangerous and we've sent letters to the province and we've had letters returned where they just asked to contact the RCMP when they feel unsafe," says Ewen. "Unfortunately I don't think it's enough."

Ewen says they need to start looking at remedies before there is a fatality, noting he doesn't want something bad to happen when it could have been avoided.

Ewen says he is not sure if provincial officials are not listening or if they are just choosing not to allocate their funds for these types of concerns.

"I think there's municipalities outside of Winnipeg that need to be taken care of, especially for our roadwork and road repair. It's devastating and it's not just my municipality of Ritchot, it's everywhere around me," he says. "The road disrepair, especially for the provincial side of the roads, it's hurtful to see it not being fixed as quickly as it should be."

Among other things, Ewen says a proper crosswalk is needed for pedestrians to get from the new development to the older portion of St. Adolphe.
