The gym at Steinbach Christian School is out of commission. Principal Emery Plett says a sprinkler went off one evening last week when it was struck by a ball during an activity.

"We had a sprinkler head broken in the course of some activity in the gym and we had about 1,000 gallons of water get dumped onto our wood floor."

Plett says they sponged up as much water as possible as fast as they could. He adds a restoration company is currently drying out the floor and, once that's done, the school's insurance company will determine the extent of damage and the necessary repairs. He expects they will have a better idea on that by the end of the week.

Plett says it couldn't have happened at a worse time, in the middle of a cold winter.

"The gymnasium in our facility, because we are a full K to 12 school, is used almost every moment of every day for (phys ed) classes. And then we have our full sports program after school that also is now interrupted. So we are busy working on trying to find some alternative arrangements for us to be able to do physical education and to be able to continue running our extracurricular sports program."
