Steinbach Credit Union has withdrawn its plan for a parking lot on five properties it owns along Reimer Avenue immediately north of Elmdale Street. SCU had previously applied to Steinbach city council for a conditional use permit to accommodate the proposal. SCU Chief Executive Officer Glenn Friesen says they have now had a change of heart. He explains why.

"We understand that there are some questions (from city council) about adding additional parking without adding more retail or commercial there on Reimer, based on the long-term plan of the city. And also, if they had approved this request, there were a lot of complications that came along with it and they also became a little costly. I do believe that for what we want to do, there is enough parking today. So we actually withdrew (the application)."

Friesen says they have a potential buyer for their old building along Main Street which wouldn't require much parking during regular business hours.

"We are working with a potential buyer and that's where the parking issue comes in. Without going into details, we believe it could work within the existing parking, given the schedules that they require. We're going to continue exploring it to see if it's going to work. If not, then we'll have to keep on looking."

Friesen is leaving the door open though, noting there is still a chance they could revive the parking plot plan if circumstances change.
