After a prolonged winter when it seemed we might never make it to spring, warmer weather finally arrived last week. And, it appears some farmers in the Steinbach area will begin spring seeding later this week. Ed Peters of Henervic Farms says they will be in their fields this week.

"We are going to be starting to put down our fertilizer on our winter wheat either today or tomorrow. And then, if the weather holds the way it is now, I would expect that we would be trying some wheat seeding later in the week."

Peters says the soil temperatures have been rising nicely in recent days.

"The soil temperature has changed quite a bit. I think Sunday during the day, at points, it was up to eight and then at night time it drops down. So the average is somewhere between four and five, but that's not a problem for wheat. I'd be very surprised if you wouldn't see something going (this week). Now, we haven't pulled machines into the field so I don't know with the frost coming out, whether the moisture will come up and make it sticky underneath. But on top, it certainly looks relatively dry."

Peters adds it's far too early to worry about moisture levels.

"It is drier than it has been some years but last year started off really dry as well. So, it's always a little hard to get too worried about it this early because a rain in the middle of next week or of this week would change that outlook quite a bit."

Meanwhile, he says it looks like winter wheat has survived okay this year but adds they will have a better idea by the end of the week. Peters says that would be a marked improvement from last year when they had to re-seed all of their winter wheat acres.
