The Mayor for Ritchot says the province is making it easier for municipalities to erect speed reader boards.

Earlier this year, Ritchot council met with RCMP, expressing concern how even though they own an electronic speed reader board, their hands are tied on where these boards can be placed. With most of their main streets falling along provincial roads, Chris Ewen says it makes it difficult to put up these boards as a way of slowing down traffic.

"It does take a little bit of time to get any approval on even municipal roads," says Ewen.

But Ewen says the process has now changed. Applying for one of these signs will now be done through the Minister of Infrastructure instead of the Highway Traffic Board.

"So it removes that whole panel and it's supposed to be a lot quicker process," says Ewen.

He adds he is confident that speed reader boards will help with some of the speeding issues they have in the municipality.

"I think that's a great opportunity and I'm really impressed that the province went that route," says Ewen.

He notes approval for these signs along municipal roads can be done by Ritchot council.
