The old museum near the grotto in St. Malo was burnt to the ground Monday night.

St. Malo Fire Chief Jason Remillard says the building was part of the town for many years but adds the community did not want the eyesore anymore nor the task of maintaining it. He notes they offered it the fire department for training with an end goal of having it burnt down.

"We used it multiple times actually," says Remillard, "we set a couple of fires in there, practice searches, practiced fire attacks and at the end they just wanted us to burn it down."

Remillard notes the building was gutted before it was offered to the fire department so he says there was nothing left inside.

Crews lit the fire around 7pm and put out the last few flames just before 10pm.
