The value of building permits in Steinbach in the first half of this year is just two-thirds of what it was in the first half of last year. Slightly over $20 million in permits were issued this year compared to almost $30 million last year. But there were 17 more permits issued this year at 124. Mayor Chris Goertzen has this reaction to the numbers.

"It's good to see over $20 million of construction activity so far this year. We know the last half of the year is usually a busy time, so we look forward to that at least doubling in the next number of months. We see quite a number of permits being issued this year, but for smaller amounts, so a lot of smaller activity, whether it's residential upgrades or garages being added or businesses that are making modifications."

Goertzen says he is not worried that the dollar value of permits is down.

"These numbers ebb and flow over the years. Some years we have lots of commercial development and very little residential, some years we have lots of residential and very little commercial, this year we're seeing a balance. But we're seeing that shift from large projects to many smaller projects. It's really good to see a lot of people are thinking about how to improve their neighbourhoods, their structures in their yards, we continue to see good investment throughout the community."

Goertzen notes the planning department at city hall remains very busy fielding inquiries from developers which is a positive indicator for the coming months.

"They are talking to a lot of different developers who are looking at additional housing or additional multi-family developments as well as some commercial aspects, so the activity is still going strong across the board. We look forward to people continuing to see Steinbach as a great place to do business and to live."
