The City of Steinbach is looking into the feasibility of opening the aquatic centre on all statutory holidays. It is currently closed on stat holidays during the winter. City councillor Susan Penner says the question came up this past Monday on the Louis Riel Day holiday when many families were looking for something to do.

"We're providing the pool as a service to our community so I find it unfortunate that on days when families are actually off that they don't have access to this service that we're providing."

Deputy Mayor John Fehr says he heard the same thing.

"I spent a little bit of time on FaceBook and there were a lot of people looking for things to do with their kids. That was one thing they could not do. I think, if we're going to have a facility that's going to cater to families, it's something we should look at."

Mayor Chris Goertzen agrees it's certainly worth investigating.

"When we have time off with our families, we often like to do things together and so investigating this is a worthy cause. At the same time, we have to be mindful of the costs the city will incur. It's always good to review policy and so council asked the administration to review that policy to see what the cost implications are and we'll look at future budgets to see if that's possible."

Steinbach Chief Administrative Officer Troy Warkentin notes swimming pools in Winnipeg are typically closed on statutory holidays. The Steinbach Aquatic Centre is currently open on a few stat holidays including Canada Day, the August Civic Holiday and Labour Day as well as on Remembrance Day.
