The Steinbach Fire Department responded to seven collisions last year at the Highway 12 and Highway 52 intersection.

Chief Kel Toews says that is more than any other intersection. Toews says he is not surprised.

"It is one of the busiest intersections," notes Toews. "You've got the intersection of two of our busiest highways in our city and it only makes sense that you are going to get more collisions there."

Toews says collisions there usually don't result in very serious injuries because the vehicles involved are not travelling at high speeds. He suggests most often the collisions there are the result of driver error and says there is probably nothing that could be done to that intersection to reduce the number of collisions. In 2016, the Steinbach Fire Department was called to this intersection five times.

The next two busiest intersections for the Steinbach Fire Department were Highway 52 at Industrial Road, as well as Brandt Street at Reimer Avenue, where there were five collisions each.

Toews says he is surprised that Brandt and Reimer is so high on that list, noting that is quite a jump from 2016 when they were called there only two times.

One intersection that had fewer collisions in 2017 was the one near the water tower at Highway 52, McKenzie Avenue and Hespeler Street. In 2016, Steinbach Fire Department was called there six times, but in 2017 only twice.

"I'm not sure what the cause of it is," says Toews. "It's a fairly new intersection, or fairly new lights there so maybe it's just people getting accustomed to it."

Also in 2017, Steinbach Fire Department was called four times to Highway 12 and Loewen Boulevard, Highway 12 and Park Road and Highway 12 and McKenzie Avenue. Firefighters were called three times to Highway 12 and Provincial Road 311 at Blumenort. Steinbach Fire Department was called twice to Highway 12 and Penfeld Drive, Highway 12 and Ellice Avenue, Highway 12 and First Street, Highway 12 and Woodhaven Avenue, Highway 52 and Giesbrecht Street and Highway 52 and Ash Street in Mitchell,

Steinbach RCMP Staff Sergeant Harold Laninga says motorists continue to disobey traffic laws at intersections. In fact, he says since January 1st, 2016, police have issued 417 tickets within the detachment for motorists failing to stop at intersections. He suggests there is a simple solution to reduce the number of collisions.

"These accidents are occurring because people aren't stopping, because they are proceeding before it is safe to do so," he says. "When you think of the number of calls that the fire department is responding to, the number of calls the police are responding to, it's just a matter of people not stopping at a red light and not stopping at a stop sign."

Meanwhile, according to Manitoba Public Insurance, there were 2,268 collisions in 2017 within the city of Steinbach. That is up from 2,196 in 2016 and 2,205 in 2015.
