The Mayor Of Steinbach says as city council moves forward with recreation development in the years to come, the idea of an indoor walking track will certainly be on their radar.

Chris Goertzen made the comment Friday morning following his monthly Open Door. Goertzen says spring is certainly in the air, as much of his discussion Friday centered around spring cleaning and recreation activities.

(Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen)In observing recreation facilities in other communities, Goertzen says indoor walking paths are certainly common. He notes these are well used and can be utilized by people of all ages. He notes residents of Steinbach have different ideas for what should be included in a recreation facility and it seems an indoor track is a common theme.

"They do want to see something that involves seniors, it involves youth, and it's something that is a low-cost item that will have high use," notes Goertzen.

Another topic that came up Friday was the idea of adding lights to the regional walking paths within Steinbach. Goertzen says some paths have lights, others don't. But he notes it is an expensive undertaking.

"This year's budget we do not have any lighting put in place for those programs," admits Goertzen. "But we do review these on a yearly basis."

And finally, with people in spring cleaning mode, Goertzen reminds residents of the city's seasonal compost program. Instead of a door-to-door compost program, the city sets up bins on Saturdays at both Woodlawn and Stonybrook Middle schools. That program will start again May 13.
