The surge in Steinbach housing starts continued into April. There were eight starts during the month which brings the total to 57 for the first four months of the year. Mayor Chris Goertzen told city council this week that building permits in April totalled $1.43 million, raising the year-to-date total to $16.8 million.

"We see additional homes being built, 57 year-to-date, and there have been more already in the last number of weeks."

The eight housing starts in April included three single-family homes and a five-plex.

Councillor Earl Funk says it's shaping up to be a big growth year.

"It looks like we're off to a really good year, Just under $17 million (in permits) and a lot of new home starts. That's looking good. New people are moving in."
