Crossing guard hours are being increased at two different schools throughout Hanover to deal with certain safety concerns.

“At Woodlawn School we’ve been noticing some challenges along the back of the school near Penner and Barkman,” states Assistant Superintendent Shelley Amos who notes that the area is prone to high volumes of traffic.

This intersection is a common crossing area for students and is becoming a safety hazard. Amos notes that parents have been encouraged to use Henry Street and the Church parking lot across from the school to drop off students, but she admits this has not fully solved the problem.

Crossing guard hours at the intersection of Penner and Barkman will increase because it is a high traffic area.

“The school has been doing their best to supervise but, because of the increased safety needs, we really felt like we needed to add some crossing guard time.”

The Woodlawn EA's who act as crossing guards are now set to remain at the intersection of Penner and Barkman for an extended period of time at the end of the school day.

Meanwhile, at South Oaks School in Grunthal, a similar problem has presented itself. Amos indicates that the recent moving of a bus loop has created different traffic patterns around the school and poses a new threat.

“We noticed one crossing area that became a concern so we are providing some support there for the remainder of this year as well."

Amos thanks the crossing guards for the work they do to keep the school walking routes safe and wants to ensure all students are able to walk to and from school safely every day.
