Mitchell Middle School students took to the streets Wednesday afternoon to give the community of Mitchell a spring cleaning.

Grade Eight Student Hailey Funk says they also invited Mitchell Residents to join them in cleaning up trash. She adds the cleanup day gives the students a sense of pride in the community.

“Our school, every year does a community cleanup, so pretty much we each get assigned a street and we all take garbage bags and we clean up all of Mitchell. We don't go across the highway, but we do all of the one side of Mitchell.”

Funk says Mitchell Middle School Principal Andrew Mead is always pushing the students to clean up after themselves and be conscious of litter. She notes students were in the ditches from 2 p.m. To 3 p.m. then went back to the school for a snack.

“As a reward for us doing this, some of the teachers are staying back to make hot dogs and we are having a barbecue after, so if the community joins us, then they can get in on that as well.”
