The Steinbach Fire Department was called to a collision at 5:51 Friday morning on Highway #52, just west of Steinbach.

Assistant Deputy Chief Mike Penner describes what happened.

"We had a vehicle versus a deer just west of Steinbach in front of the RM (of Hanover) building. The driver was heading into Steinbach and came into contact with a deer. There was a significant amount of damage to the vehicle, it's not driveable. The deer had to be put down."

Penner adds the female driver and lone occupant of the small SUV was not injured.

He notes wildlife is very active at this time of year and urges drivers to use extra caution, although, he adds, animals are very hard to see in the dark.
