At long last, the front entrance at Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach is back open to the public.
It had been closed since last March when demolition began of the former entrance. On Tuesday of this week, the doors were re-opened to the public. An official grand opening has been scheduled for Thursday, January 19th, beginning at 10 am. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place in the EMS bay off Henry Street.
Meanwhile, with 2017 now upon us, Abe Bergen Board Chair for Southern Health-Santé Sud says he expects some challenges for the regional health authority this year. Bergen notes one such challenge will be a relatively new board coming together with a brand new Chief Executive Officer.
Back in November, Manitoba Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen appointed new boards for the five provincial regional health authorities. Bergen of Kleefeld was named Chair for Southern Health-Santé Sud. He was one of eight newly appointed members, while four members of the former board were invited back. Two weeks earlier, CEO Kathy McPhail announced she would be stepping down at the end of April. Bergen expects a new CEO will be named that same month.
"There will certainly be a challenge of a new board and new CEO coming together and providing leadership to the region," says Bergen. "But we have really good administrators, we have good staff, so I think the transition will go well."
Bergen says another challenge this year will relate to their finances. He notes the federal government is unsure how much money will be provided to provincial health care.
"They are looking to ensure that it is as efficient as possible," he says. "I think our region has been exceptionally efficient in the last number of years."
