An SUV crashed into the side of the Century 21 building in Steinbach Wednesday evening.

Steinbach Assistant Fire Chief Russ Reimer says they were dispatched to a single vehicle collision involving a building shortly after 11 P.M.

"We are here in front of the Century 21 building. It looks like a vehicle traveling southbound will have lost control due to the slippery conditions. They came across the parking lot, narrowly missed a hydro pole and smashed into the building. We have disabled the power to the vehicle and now we are just trying to secure the building."

Reimer says when they arrived the driver of the vehicle and lone occupant had been able to get out of the vehicle on their own and was being looked at by EMS. He notes the extent of the injuries is not known at this time. He adds there was quite of bit of damage to the building.

"Looks like they struck directly on a pillar of brick and into one of the windows. The brick is taken out pretty good on the bottom, looks like a supporting pillar so it will definitely have to be secured and they will have to get a builder out here to do some fixing."

RCMP say the 37-year-old male driver told investigators he swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle on Highway #12, ended up in the parking lot and then hit the building. Police say the driver was given a three-month suspension for driving with a blood alcohol level between .05 and .08. They note the breathalyzer showed a level right at the legal limit of .08.
