Summer is fast approaching, and a number of local communities are running day camp programs to give kids something to do.

Teresa Mistelbacher is the Camps and Recreation Programmer for the Town of Niverville. She notes they have 9 weeks of camps planned for kids from ages 3 to 13.

“We brought back some of our most popular themes. In our Kinder Camps for ages three to six, half days, things like Mini Chefs Week and our Princess and Heroes, those ones are back again as well as our Nature Camps. Then, we've added in some new ones as well. For both of the ages, Kinder Camp and the school ages 6 to 12, we've brought in a School of Wizardry Camp this year, a Drama and Theater Camp and Camp Olympics as well.”

Last year, Mistelbacher says they had approximately 300 campers in total and they expect to get near that number again this summer. She notes a number of their camps are full or near full already, so it is better to sign your kids up sooner rather than later. Registration is online at NivervilleRec.ca

Ian Dickey is the Leisure Services Programmer for the RM of La Broquerie. He says they are running eight weeks of camps this summer with a different theme each week.

“Our home base is at the HyLife Center and it's nice, we're right at our recreation campus where there's a splash pad, playground, school fields, baseball diamonds, all right in that area, so it's really great for the kids with lots of activities available.”

Dickey says they have a number of kids that sign up for all 8 weeks, but many that are only there for their favourite theme or on the weeks that suit.

He adds “It's a great service for the community to be able to provide. While parents are working, we can give the kids a fun and safe place to go enjoy the summer.”

Parents can register their kids for La Broquerie’s Summer Day Camps at LaBroquerie.com

The City of Steinbach is also offering day camp programming this summer.

Dan Taillefer, Steinbach Recreation Services Coordinator says they have all sorts of great activities and sports planned and they even plan to bring out a few firefighters to talk with the kids.

Taillefer adds they’ve got a great team lined up to pull this off.

“We're going to have two camp directors, they're going to come in a couple weeks before camp starts, just to prepare all the activities and all the schedules and get familiar with that. They're the same two as last year, so they're got some experience running the camps and being with the kids, so that's always great.”

Taillefer says the City of Steinbach is running six weeks of camps for kids from the ages of 6 to 12 and though they are filling up quickly, there are still spots available on the City of Steinbach website
