Stars Air Ambulance was dispatched to the Whiteshell near Caddy Lake just after 4 p.m. Monday.

Communications Lead Cam Heke explains there was a friend with the patient who waved crews in and was able to help crews locate the injured person in the remote location.

"The patient sustained an injury from a ground level fall," notes Heke. "The crews arrived and they had to go through the bush for about 300 to 400 metres until they reached the patient. They were then able to bring the patient back to the helicopter with the assistance from [Whiteshell] fire fighters. The patient was loaded in the aircraft and then brought back to Winnipeg and then taken to the Health Science Centre."

Heke adds their crews are very well trained in remote area missions and were glad to have the assistance of a paramedic from Grande Prairie.

"Fortunately yesterday one of our medical crew, our paramedic that day, he was in covering a shift from our Grande Prairie base and so he's particularly familiar with remote responses. His home base is in Grande Prairie, which is of course in north western Alberta and in that area they often do remote calls."

Heke notes he's thankful for the continued good working relationships STARS has with ground emergency services.
