The City of Steinbach is awaiting input from local schools before deciding whether to reduce speed limits in school zones. Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra says the city is following up after the province put through legislation that gives municipalities the authority to control speeds in those areas.

"We are already beginning the process of consulting with the Hanover School Division. We will also consult with other interested parties such as Steinbach Christian High School and any other schools in regards to what their thoughts are and what they think would be best by the schools. There are obviously a number of schools within the City of Steinbach and we don't want to rush into any hasty decisions. We want to make sure that we get the necessary information and then decide accordingly."

City Manager Jack Kehler says the city expects to hear back from the Hanover School Division by the end of the month. He adds the information will be processed by the city's Engineering Department which will then make recommendations to city council.

Zwaagstra says council is concerned about traffic safety near schools.

"We're certainly very willing to hear requests and to give them serious consideration. We certainly want schools to be as safe as possible. If we do receive requests for lowering the speeds by schools, that's something we will take very seriously and give serious consideration."
