A bridge across the Seine River Diversion, 1.5 miles east of Landmark, will be out of commission for at least another year. It was closed last September after the bank of the diversion eroded and created a dangerous situation. Ruth Eden, executive director of Structures at Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation, says the repair will be done in two stages. The embankment must be fixed first followed by the bridge repairs. Eden adds work on the embankment won't begin for some time.

"Right now we've got the work for the diversion channel planned for late fall this year. We'd like to go in and do it sooner but we need to have low water. We need to be doing work at the bottom, in stream work, and we want the water as low as possible so we have to wait until the fall of this year to go in and do that work."

Eden says the bridge repairs will take place after that. She notes they are still assessing that part of the work and design has not yet started.

"Indications are with the bridge it's going to be very substantial repairs. We're still investigating what our options are on that but it's not going to be an easy fix. We don't want to just do something quick and then we still have the same problem and it's not safe."

The closure of the bridge has meant a significant detour for people who live in the immediate area.
