On the heels of last week's wintery weather, many local golf courses are opening their doors.

Mike Pittman from Quarry Oaks Golf Course says they actually welcomed golfers back last Friday, while it was still cold out.

“I mean the weather wasn't great, but we had some golfers come out still and then the weekend actually shaped up really well and we had a packed course almost the entire weekend. It was a good start to the season and we're super pumped now that the door is open, seeing all the customers come back.”

Pittman says the course is in good condition to start the season though there are some soft spots on the cart path as the frost comes out.

Pat Gauthier from the La Broquerie Golf Course says Monday was the first day of their season.

“A lot of golfers came out to experience their first round of the year. Everybody that came out was very excited. Staff and everybody in the community is just getting ramped up, looking forward to another great golf season.”

Gauthier says not only is it great to get back out onto the course, but it's also encouraging to see old friends after a long winter.

“It's my third year now managing the course and it's nice to see all the familiar faces, knowing them by first name like they're part of the family and then getting to know new people as well.”

Last year, they constructed a new green for hole 8 at La Broquerie Golf Course, and Gauthier says they will give it a full year to mature before bringing it into the mix next year. In the meantime, he notes they have plans to build and renovate a number of tee boxes this year and continue working to improve the course.

Kyle Guenther, Manager of the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Course, says they opened their course in two stages. He notes they opened for members only on Tuesday and for the general public on Wednesday. They had initially hoped to get things rolling last week, but Mother Nature had other ideas.

“Last week was a little bit tough. All things considered, we probably would have opened Monday or Tuesday last week, but then would have closed right away Wednesday through Friday or Saturday, so we gave it a few extra days and here we go, we're open and excited.”

Guenther notes, they are happy with course conditions to start the season.

“We actually wintered fairly well, greens are looking really good and it's just really nice to have people on the course and enjoying golf again.”

Lucille Friesen from Girouxsalem says their course opened for the first time on Wednesday.

“You know, it's held up very, very well. It's in very nice shape. The Greens are, for the most part, very good and everything is turning a beautiful green. It's so wonderful. I'm so excited to be able to see everyone again.”

Maplewood Golf Course has plans to open up on Friday with a brand new club house and parking lot.

Meanwhile, the Lorette Golf Course has been open since Friday, April 12th.
